We've made changes to our signup page which we hope will cut out the bulk of the spam we've been receiving.

Fingers crossed eh? :)

Cool, I hope it works. The junk postings are so annoying.

Yeah, what kind of a mental disorder causes some human beings to engage in that crap?!!
I don't make syntax errors. It's just that sometimes whoever wrote the programming language failed to anticipate my creative coding.

It took a while for the already registered bots to get filtered out (i.e. banned) but I'd say things are under control now. We get the occasional spammer, just as we've always done, but it had been completely ridiculous these past few months.

It makes me wonder, as these bots get smarter and captchas are a complete no-brainer for them, how does the future look for web forums and blogs etc? How do you make something that's not solvable by a computer, but is solvable by your "average" user?

Per-post spam detection?

I've got ideas on how, I believe Jab does as well, on how to do things server side that would flag the accounts, but it's not really something that I'd want to post publicly,

I have some ideas that are very effective and I'm willing to share them for use here on the community (and also to give a little something back to the community). I'll only share them with mods however as I'm not willing to risk the tactics getting any special attention by spammers as to ensure they remain effective as long as possible.

Spam hasn't been too bad and I only have to report it occasionally. The automated stuff is easy as cake to stop and the human posted spam sticks out like a sore thumb no matter how well they adapt their own tactics.

Coincidentally Stratego is my favorite board game.

What mods etc are you using for phpBB to prevent spam? Mine (running the latest phpBB) is spammed to oblivion currently.
