Forum Upgrades

Postby John Cartwright » Sat Feb 19, 2011 6:59 pm

It is my pleasure to inform everyone that we have performed a series of upgrades, specifically geared towards security, on our forum software. We hope our spam will be significantly reduced in the foreseeable future.

On another note, we also did include a http://devnetwork.net -> http://forums.devnetwork.net 301 redirection for those of you who were having issues with double log in.

On another note, we have disabled all themes except for prosilver, in lieu of maintaining up to date forum software and all our modifications for the future. It is simply unmaintainable performing forum upgrades with mods across 5 different themes, so we have decided to stick with prosilver. We only had about 80 users in total not using this theme, so if you are one of those 80 users, our sincere apologies.

EDIT | We will be restoring the subsilver2 theme soon

Please let us know if you come across any bugs.

Yours truly,
The mod team

It appears smilies and avatars are not showing up in all browsers, and will soon be fixed.

Thanks.

Excellent. Why are we only using the subdomain forums? Why not just use devnetwork.net?

We are reserving the main domain for potentially something else, among other sub-domains we have used in the past. However, the main reason behind this is we do not want to have the sub-domain AND the main domain pointing to the same place, since we did have issues with people having to log in twice.

So far not a simple spam post has gotten through. We have just implemented additional upgrades to attempt to reduce/eliminate spam accounts in general from being created, and it seems to be working quite well.

We will be performing some further upgrades this afternoon to complete the process, so there may be an half an hour of downtime, but I doubt it.

The old skin dissapeared, and I was so addicted to it ;) Any chance to get it back?

Unfortunately we have decided that maintenance of our mods and forum software is more important that maintaining 6 different themes. PHPBB is absolutely insane to maintain more than 1 theme once you dive into mods, especially our custom mods. You were 1 of 84 users that used our non-standard theme, and it was simply too much effort to support all of the different themes for such a small percentage of our users.

My apologies for the for the inconvenience, but this decision was made to better the overall experience of the forums.

Okay, we will be adding back our original subsilver theme back within a day or two, so stay tuned.

I personally liked the one that was gray (don't remember the name now). My only problem with it was that it was fixed-width...

I'm glad about the upgrades. I noticed you installed a "quick reply" button too. Like it. :drunk:

I'm curious what percentage of frequent users 84 is. Like Darhazer, I preferred a different theme. I suppose I can get accustomed to this one, though.

If someone wants to step up and maintain their favorite theme, then by all means we will be more than happy to oblige. However, the mod team I think are only willing to maintain 2 themes at the moment.

Which themes did you guys prefer?

For those of you that meet our minimum post requirement to avoid captchas, your themes will be restored in a few minutes. This is possible since those templates that do not implement the additional security checks do not require the updated changes (yet!).

We will be porting the template over within the next day or two, at which point we will make the template selection available again.

I have been using Avalon, but I am tolerant of any of them.
